Welcome to the NiCBand Program

Specialists in Cranial Remolding of Plagiocephaly and Post Operative Craniosynostosis for over 35 years.

The NiC BAND Program is the only comprehensive medical treatment for improving  Deformational Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly for over 35 years. The twelve patient care standards set forth in the Program detail our commitment to your infant’s care. We utilize the latest class 1 FDA approved Structured Light data imaging system to capture a 3-dimensional image of your infant’s head, no plaster molding necessary. The frequent follow-up appointments necessary during cranial remolding treatment are made more convenient by our multiple office locations.

Anthony J. Cappa, BS, CPO is the Director of the NiC BAND Program with over 30 years of experience in cranial remolding. He has worked closely with the leading neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, craniofacial surgeons and pediatricians in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk. He has lectured physicians, allied health professionals, case workers and insurance companies on the treatment of infants with cranial asymmetry.

A Cranial Remolding Orthosis (CRO) , is the treatment of choice for Deformational Plagiocephaly. Numerous medical research articles have been written to demonstrate

the safety and effectiveness of CRO treatment. One article appeared in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal in 2013. It compared traditional repositioning and physical therapy to cranial remolding. Over 4,000 infants were evaluated and, based on severity, placed into the traditional therapy group or the CRO group. At the study’s conclusion, 77% of the traditional therapy group attained the targeted correction, while 94% of the CRO group attained the target correction.

Factors causing Cranial Deformation

The primary reason for the rapid increase in this condition can be traced back to 1992. A study of newborns by the American Academy of Pediatrics, showed that infants who slept on their backs had a significantly lower incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The dramatic drop in SIDS cases reported in this study resulted in a change in the recommended sleeping position of infants by the American Academy of Pediatrics. No longer would the AAP recommend infants sleep on their stomachs. A campaign called the “ Back To Sleep Campaign” was launched to raise awareness and promote supine (back) sleeping. Parents are being instructed to place their infants on their back to sleep.

However, the second part of the Back To Sleep Campaign is to place your infant on their stomach when they are awake and you are with them. Many parents fail to hear this part and have their infants on their back all of the time.
